jer1956 explains how to use an Android device with an X2 (
http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,6695.0.html). I've been experimenting wih an iPad and I'd like to share my experiences and to hear yours, especially if you can find a better solution.
I found 2 apps that would let me select and play music, films, pictures on my MED500X2. There were several other apps that only went one way, I could only play my X2's contents on the iPad.
iMediaControl is a free app (by Sitecom). It doesn't support playlists or album art. You can swipe to get the next picture, but no slideshows. I'd say look no further except that iMediaControl will only play the song you select, not the rest of the album. Or if it can, I haven't found out how.
PlugPlayer kosts € 4.99. It does show album art, plays the whole album, let's you create playlists. It's better than iMediaControl but in my opinion it's not € 4.99 better.
Both apps do let you control sound volume. PlugPlayer will let you skip forward in a movie, iMediaControl doesn't. As always, uPnP must be turned on on your X2. My X2 is listed as a "Realtek Embedded UPnP ...".
Both iMedicaControl and PlugPlayer will do the job, but they're not nearly as good as I'd like. They basically let you browse your hard disk, "PC Directory" > "media" > "HDD:" > root directory. They show the entire contents of the directory, it's all got a 20th century look. I'd expected something along the lines of the X2's favorites and a music/video/pictures jukebox that would present my media in an attractive way and make it easy to find the content I'm looking for.
I've also had stability problems with both apps. Sometimes the app would stop, sometimes the X2 would reboot. I've found that the controls didn't always respond if I switched back to the app. If I killed the app to (literally) stop the music, I couldn't play back to the X2 anymore, it was no longer listed as a device. I'll try to be more specific on this in a future post.
Apps that didn't let me play back to my X2 were iMediaShare, MediaConnect, Primare HD. I found all these apps by searching for "upnp" in the app store, but that gives 72 hits for the iPad and 109 for the the iPad/iPhone. Maybe there are better alternatives?
As for my setup, I've got an MED500X2 (firmware 2.07) with a 1 Tb hard disk connected by a LAN to my modem/router. The iPad 3 works wirelessly. I've also got a Smart Tv BTW, these apps also recognize it as a PnP device
