Hi

I see that the 300X can only read a maximum of 2TB NTFS partition. Does that apply to an external usb drive as well? I have a 3TB external.

External 3TB drives have to use GPT to work with linux. Many do not, instead using 4K sector MBR in order to work with windows XP.  So you have to know if it's Linux, or windows XP, compatible. Makers offer reformatting tools to turn them form one to the other..but they can never be both at the same time.

So if it's GPT, then Linux can read it, but not Windows, and if it's 4k sector MBR, it's the other way around?

Windows XP is the problem...it dosn't support GPT.  External drives optomised for "windows" will use 4K sector MBR..so the the same drive can work with Win7/win8 and XP. So if it says XP compatible..it can't be linux compatible.

Got it. So to solve this problem, I'll have to get a mede8er with a 1185 processor, and re-format the 3tb using the mede8er format util - is that correct?

No.....if you have this problem you format using a utility suppied by the company, or an OS which supports both MBR and GPT, or a linux live! CD/DVD.  If you have this drive already..does it work with your X2?

A bit of background... My sister bought  two drives a few weeks back (one for my mom). The one is a GoFlex 2Tb, and the other a GoFlex 3Tb. Both came formatted NTFS. She then went and bought an Apacer AL720 media player (against my advice!). I believe it also uses the 1185 processor. The Apacer reads and plays the 2tb but not the 3tb. Hence my question regarding the 300X.

It's not an 1185 issue..it's a linux one.   Both the 2Tb and the 3TB are using MBR...but the 3TB has to use 4K sector MBR to get beyond 2 TB, which is not compatible with linux, which only uses 512b MBR...as used by the 2 TB.

So if you reformat the 3TB to use GPT partitons..it should work with any linux player...but you would then need an OS which understands GPT in order to load it with files.  That can't be Win XP.

You're 100% right. Found the following on Microsoft's site...

Q.   Can Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 read, write, and boot from GPT disks?

A.   Yes, all versions can use GPT partitioned disks for data. Booting is only supported for 64-bit editions on UEFI-based systems.

Q.   Can Windows 2000, Windows NT 4, or Windows 95/98 read, write, and boot from GPT?

A.   No. Again, legacy software will see only the Protective MBR.
