Compress to what?

Typically there is not much "empty space" in video-files, as these files are "compressed" anyway in terms of no or few redundand information.
That is the basis how compression is working.

Making video-files smaller normally is done by reencoding with more efficient codec, i.e. DVD --> Divx,  what means shrinking Blu-Ray by reencoding does not really work, as there are no more efficient codecs out there than used in Blu-Rays.

So shrinking BRs typically is done by reencoding for lower bitrate and/or leave out unnecessary parts.

Very general answer.

V3.0 Beta
MED500X with internal HD 250G
100Mbit Networked with CAT5 to AVM Fritz 7220
Networkshare mainly on Win2003 Server, sometimes on Windows7 x64 Ultimate
Connected via Component to LCD and HDMI to projector.
AVR: Denon-3805
Projector: Sony HW-10
LCD: Viewpia 37
Blu-Ray-Player: LG BD 370

Thank you for the info above. The problem that I have is that I have several avi files which are in the 2 gig mark each. When viewing these clips, the slightly less than acceptable quality can be notice. This low quality clip should occupy around the 600 mb to 700 mb mark (compared to clips of the same picture quality) but instead it uses up 2 gigs + of space each….. ???

I use a program called SUPER, this allows you
1) to convert any 1 format to another
2) it will re-encode to the same format reducing the file size

I had a webcam recorder (freeware) however the file sizes were huge, 377mb for 6 mins - once put through super the file was was 4mb (about what it should have been)

Best of all its free
