MED400X2 playback randomly stops

Hello,

I own a MED400X2. My setup:
400X2 (firmware 2.0.3) connected to gigabit switch + PC connected to gigabit switch with NFS share

When I play any of my movies (mkvs, 720p or 1080p), the movie stops after a random amount of time. This happens over and over again. I just get kicked back to the home screen. When I play the movie again, it doesn't ask me if I want to resume playback.

I can't watch any of my movies like this.. What can I do to resolve this issue?

Sounds like you have a Network problem.

You can try as foll

1) Try using Samba and see if you still have the same problem
2) If you really want to use NFS then go to Device Manager  ---> Network Adapters ----->Properties   ---> Advanced ---> Performance Options -----> Properties ---- and enable RX & TX Flow Control.

I think the 'Support Pause frame use' is the same as flow control -- so you should enable this. Another thing that you can try is to plug the X2 into your Router (if its a 10/100) rather than directly into the Gbit Switch and that will do a similar thing .

my ethernet device does not seem to support pause settings. I have a very common motherboard: Asrock 870 Extreme 3.

If I plug my X2 into the router, I'm not able to stream my mkv without stuttering. I feel kind of stuck now..

Do you have some 10/100 switch somewhere? Try to place that direct between your router and mede8er.
This will force flow control.

I don't own any more switches. But my Mede8er isn't connected to my router, but my switch.

The setup is like this:

Modem/Router -> Gbit switch -> Mede8er
                                             \-> PC

Is adding a switch the only option? Seems a bit inconvenient to be honest. Thanks for your replies.

As another thing you could try for a test, put your NAS ethernet card temporary on half duplex mode and see if that helps.

Back with some more testing:

I've tried half duplex, setting rx/tx on, setting autonegotiation off, but to no avail.

However, 2 videos played perfectly. So it occured to me that there is a difference in file codecs/resolution etc.

What is the factor that decides that 1,2 play perfectly, and 3,4 don't play properly?

As far as I can tell, it's not the format (mkv or wmv), resolution (1 and 4 have the same res).

My guess is that the first 2 videos are high bitstream movies, higher then the 2 last.
As you have some handshake issue, the first 2 bitstreams probably don't need rx tx handshake, because the stream keeps playing without the need to buffer (tx off not needed), while for the last 2 tx rx handshake is needed to stop the stream temporary because your nas is delivering faster then the med can play.

After trying a lot of possible settings on my ethernet settings I deciced to give Samba a try... and guess what? No problems whatsoever!

Probabaly my NFS settings weren't optimal. I might give NFS a shot another day again, but at the moment I'm very happy it works!

Hey kevin89, i had (i think) the same problem you described. With NFS, i could watch a whole 1080P movie without a problem but sometime with a simple 720p series it would stop for a few seconds (6) and go further, stop again and go further trough the series. With the next serie no problem, and maybe with the third the same. So i'm using samba at the moment with no problem. I know my nfs is working right, got a throughput of 30MiB/s from my NAS (OpenMediaVault) to my Linux machine.

400 users tend to be NAS users..and may not have the option to test media avoiding the network.  Stuttering and stops can also be codec issues..and nothing to do with the network at all. 500 users are used to playing files off the hard drive..and can test media that way. If it stutters off the drive..then the network  may not be completely to blame.
