Hello,

is there a tutorial where I can find how I can upgrade from a minor 500GB to a more spacely 2TB harddisk without loosing files? And not transferring all files to my PC over the network first. Can I remove the old 500GB, add the 2TB to the mede8er, format the drive. Remove the 2TB drive. Add both drives to a Windows 7 computer at s-ata and copy the files over from the 500GB to the 2TB. Replug the 2TB to the Mede8er and ready? I have all files and almost 1.5TB free?? Is it really that simple??

normaly , described procedure should work ...

but you can also to mount your 2Tb hdd , format with latest fw version .....mount your 500 Gb in your PC aand transfer files trough usb ....

both variant should work fine , your variant is more faster....but i'm affraid to noyt happen something wrong with unix partition if your system will try to acces them.
so be carefull if you know that your operation system have problems , then avoid your method ...

if your system is ok ....just proceed

Yup. that simple.

Make sure you format the empty drive in the mede8ter. (as you describe)

Instead of unscrewing/rescrewing  the 2TB drive you can add it to the windows 7 pc as a USB drive (mede8ter can function as a usb drive). Not sure if you safe time with it since native SATA is 4 times faster than usb.

[/quoHi, fartman,
Have thought about buying a HDD-Caddy for the 500gb, and leaving the films on it, You then be able to connect it to the 8er buy way of 1 or 2 usbs on the side of the 8er, and then ether  play or move your files.  depends how many  files you have, but saves you the hassle . Roll Eyes

( win7-pc, 46" sharp Aquos lcd, ps3, x-box 360,Merantz 7002 amp 7.1ch, optoma hd800xl-v projector, 8"-0 screen, AND MEDE8ER 1.5TB  Int  Seagate HDD which there are about  200 full dvds and a bit of music.)

Hi,

I have a hard drive with files on that I do not want to lose.
Can I just plug the drive in the Mede8er, or will it format the drive?
The drive is now formatted as NTFS and I am using an Windows XP machine to access it.

Mede8ter will not format automatically.   data will not be lost.

here is a read-only issue with nas functionality for not formatted disk in mede8ter, but other than that it should function without manually reformatting.

But the best would be to backup the media files, format in the mede8er and copy the files back?

Yes, that is the bulletproof solution
