Software without installers
« on: December 31, 2011, 10:41:03 am »
Getting media to play often requires it to be manipulated in some way. There are reprofessional tools to do it...which cost far too much. So enthusiastic amatuers create free alternatives. These are not as well packaged as the profesional variety...and are often just zipped folder and files.

Many Med users would normally stay clear of such software...being a  bit Techy for them. But if it's the only option we have...they have to be "installed".

1)Download the Zip or Rar into the usual download folder on your system.
2)Using Windows Explorer go into the download folder.
2)Right click to bring up the context folder..and select "Extract to Folder XXXXX" where XXXX is the name of the rar/zip package.
3)Check if this new folder is the top folder.  If not enter the folder until you have found the top  folder...the first to contain .exes. Go  back up one level and right click on the top folder, and select Copy.
4)Change directory to Program Files. (be sure to use (x86) if the software is 32 bit)
5)Right click anywhere in the open space to the right of the list of folders in Program Files, and select Paste.
6)Go into the new copy of the extracted folder created in Program Files.
7)Find the .exe the website says is the program, right click and select  -  Send to Desktop (create shortcut).

You can now now run the program using the shortcut.

Uhm, am I missing something or is this a tutorial how someone can extract certain files and put them somewhere? Or am I missing the program to change certain things. Sure many are not knowledgeable about computers but isn't such a tutorial like saying to someone that he needs to umwrap the choco-bar before eating it? And if someone needs help in doing this I would say he should leave the hands from any program who needs this treatment. Or maybe I am just seeing it this way with my diploma/bachelor in IT science.

If one person needs to know this...then others do. And someone did, so I posted it.  As I said in the post, some people would keep these kind of application at arms length, and yet we keep advising people to use certain software when they have no idea how to install software without in-built installers.

We have had complaints in the past that we "assume" that ordinary users have the experince of IT specialists. Most don't...

The whole point of Tips etc is to inform those who don't know these things...not insult those who do! ;)

Anyone using drag'n'drop anywhere near system/program directories is taking an unessecary risk.  It's far to easy to unclick at the wrong time....and put things where you don't want them.
