Tremendous slow file copy over USB / LAN (2 MBytes / sec)
« on: December 30, 2011, 04:22:24 PM »
Mede8er device: MED500X2
- Installed HDD: 2 TB Western digital WD20EARS (5400 rpm).
- Firmware upgraded from v1.0.3 to 2.0.3
Tests from 2 PC’s:
- Sony laptop VPCF1-3ME1 (USB3.0 port / 1000 Mbit LAN) Windows 7 64 bit
- PC with Asus P5K PRO motherboard;USB 2.0 ports;1000 Mbit LAN ; windows 7 home premium 32bit
Switch: 1000 Mbit Zyxel GS108B.

1) USB
When I copy 4 GB from my laptop with the blue USB3 cable, the transfer starts around 70 MByte/sec. Then the transfer speed gradually slows down. After a few minutes the average transfer speed is below 10 MB/sec, and at the end the speed is below 2 MB/sec.
I bought another USB 3.0 cable. Same problem.
What could be the problem?

Remark: the transfer starts around 70 MB/sec after a fresh restart of the MED500X2. When I cancel the transfer after a few minutes (when transfer slows down), and when I start a second copy without restarting the mede8er, the file transfer starts below 1MB/sec.

2) Network
File transfer over LAN from my PC to MED500X2 is a more constant, and higher than over USB, but still too slow (starts at 3,3 MB/sec; ends at 2,5 MB/sec; this should be 8 MB/sec according to your website)
The transfer speed between 2 PC’s over the same cables (I replace the mede8er with a laptop) is  > 20 MB/sec so there isn’t a network problem or PC problem.

I did these test with 2 PC’s.  Same problem on both PC’s.

It has always been like this. I hoped the upgrade would solve the speed problem.

HDD it is. I formatted the harddisk twice with the mede8er: once with version 1.0.3, and once with version 2.0.3.

No solution? Then I'll have to return the mede8er to the store.

philippe.requile, try to disable DLNA DMR. This solved similar behaviour which you are describing on my side.

I just want to add something about the network copying that I experienced.

Over the weekend I backed up my vids (about 500GB) from the internal 2TB drive in my 500X2, to an external USB drive connected to my PC over a wired network.  I used Tereacopy to facilitate the copy and the first few hours it was running at around +- 6MB/s.  I left it running over night to find it had dropped to 2.8 MB/s the following morning.  I paused the copying process on the PC, rebooted the 500X2 and resumed the copy.  It was back up to 6.8MB/s.

I didn't know about the DLNA DMR setting that might influence the copy speed, so once the music jukebox update is released, I need to copy a good 200GB of music over from the PC to the internal drive, so I will test it then.

I disabled DLNA DMR and rebooted the mede8er.
This didn't solve the problem.
I'll try another harddisk now.

I took another harddisk (WD 320 GB 7200 rpm) and the problem is solved:  48 MB/sec over USB3; 6,8MB/sec over LAN.

Tomorrrow I'll put my 2TB in my PC and test the speed there.
