slow NAS transfer speeds
« on: December 30, 2011, 01:57:21 PM »
hi there,

Network setup: have a D-Link access point operating in "ethernet to wireless" mode. Access point is plugged in to the LAN port of the mede8er (and connected via wireless to my network).

When copying files between my Mede8er and PC using SMB share (NAS mode is turned ON) the speed is poor. I get about 2MB/s for about 3s, then speed dips to zero then immediately back up to 2MB/s for another 3s, and so on.

Using same network connection when I FTP to the Mede8er, I get a consistent speed of about 4MB/s.

Why is the NAS performance so much worse than the FTP performance?

thanks.

Same goes here... very slow speeds on NAS. I also have a Wi-fi dongle. The speed is the same whether it's on cable or dongle...
Can anyone answer us?

FTP is a simple protocol and hence more efficient at "both" ends.  Samba is more complex, and on PC's is set up very inefficiently so  as to not hog resources.   I did post a tip on changing PC settings to make it work more like a Windows server.
