Hi

At present I use a "WD Element" box for showing my media, mostly TV series. I have now reached the stage of despairing with the interface. It has been suggested by my friendly hi-fi shop that I go for a Medi8er unit.

From what I have seen and read it would be able to fill my needs and then some. However, there is always a however, the Medi8er seems to come in different "flavours" and none of the so called experts in the retail outlets can give me a definative answer as to either the differences or even suggest which one to purchase.

I do not need, at least I do not think I need, wireless but I would need the medi8er to handle.mkv, .avi, .divx, .xvid video files and the usual audio and still image files. In addition a minimum of 2Tb would be nice.

Would anyone out there be able, in simple terms, to either tell me what the differences are, or point me in the right direction to discover for myself.

I apologise in advance if this has been covered before but I am a total newbie regarding this piece of kit and one of our online supplies is offering free delivery before Dec 31 so from my point of view there is a modicum of urgency.

Regards and a happy new year to everyone

they all use the same  hardware...the 1185 realtek chip. The 400x2 is small..without internal drive support. The 450x2 is also small...but can be fitted with a lap top drive...which limits you to 2 TB until they make bigger drives. the 500x2 is larger...and will take a 3tb pc drive...if you can get one of the supported drives.

No one can gurentee that media you already have which plays on another make will play. Ripped media is rarely done to global standards....that is the profiles used to make disk media. So they may or may not work. Those that don't , need transcoding.

Thanks to both jer1956 & Maasbommel for their prompt response.

It seems as though the forums are an added incentive to purchase the Medi8er, as a total newbie is helped immediately.

With specific reference to the replies, the product comparison matrix is exactly what I was looking for to be able to compare each of the drives. jer1956's comment "if you can get one of the supported drives" does ring a faint alarm bell in so much is it a case of the 500X2 requires a specific brand/type of drive or is it just a case that the 3.5" 3tb drives are not readily available?

Regards
