I'm considering getting hold of 2nd hand link station, can the the link station be connected directly to Mede8er via RJ45 CAT5 cable for video playback.

I've managed to connect a my friends link station to my laptop, mounted a ISO file using a virtual drive, the video playback was fine.

Connecting directly to the Mede8er unit  would be great as I don't have have access to wired network until I move house later next year.

What model? You have to have a Network router of some kind. An expensive NAs can do the job...but can something cheap do it? Without the model number we have no idea.  If you not going to get an expensive NAS,,,then a router with a USB socket which can become a cheap NAS is a better option.

I have a Mede8er 500x, The Link Station I've been offered is a LS-W2.0TB GL/R1-EU

I'm using a WNDR3700 router, I can only stream using this router connected via RJ45 cable to the LS, I would really prefer to be hard wired direct from the LS to Mede8er unit

That isn't how networking works. If you have a router...you connect both to  the router.

I know how networking works, all I'm asking, will Mede8er allow a TS to be connected via the RJ45 connection and play video.

As I said earlier I can't have a wired network only streaming from the WNDR3700, this is why I want to know if I can hard-wire direct to Mede8er.

This can't be any different than using media plugs etc.

I don't get your point. The router is the heart of the network. The router is how you stream video to any device that needs it.

Why can't the router be near the Med and Nas?  Video streaming is the most demanding task you can do. It might have been the norm to put the router near your PC when the only thing you where doing was sharing the internet.

Yes I know that, not sure how simple I can put this, Will the Mede8er 500x allow a LS to be directly connected to the RJ45 and playback video..

Not without something performing the router functions. It's a network interface...not point to point. You would have go to a buffalo forum and see if you can installl the software needed on the NAS, such as DNSMasq. DHCP can be bypassed by using Manual IP. Meds have to have a DNS Server or proxy to work.

This seems like a good place to try:-

I would suggest just to give it a try:

- set your mede8er to a fixed ip number in the same range as your link station
- give your link station a fixed ip number in the same range as your mede8er

e.g. 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3 both same subnet 255.255.255.0

and give it a try with a lan cable in between.

As this is not a normal setup, nobody can tell if this works, you only can give it a try.
