Hi, My new 500X2 won't rewind .mkv movies!  Is this something wrong with my player or is it a bug in the firmware? Am I doing something wrong? Fast forward works fine - really cool the way it also speeds up the sound! Help! |

Please read the guidelines for posting media problems. Use mediainfo (on a PC) to extract information from the file.
We have lots of advice on how to make you own MKV's. If they are torrents. well we have no idea how those where made. PC MKV players are desinged to deal with th badly encoded media found on torrent. VLC prides itslef on doing that. But hardware players have no such flexibility or tolerence.

I made the mkv for the player myself using MakeMKV after ripping the original DVD with RipIt4Me and DVDShrink. The original rip was done some time ago as it was meant to fit onto an ordinary DVD. I changed over to mkv because it is more elegant and generally easier to use on the player. I have lots of these all done in the same way. None of them rewind! I think that is all that is relevant to my issue. Is there any further info that is needed? |

Download MKVtoolnix and use MKVMerge GUI to remux. We don't get a lot of mpeg2 mkv's. Most people are converting to H264. Try remuxing first, transcoding takes far to long amd might not work.

Thanks jer1956 for the quick response!
So what you are saying is that my mpeg 2 videos won't play properly in the 500X2 and that I need to remux them all to H264?
I don't understand how the 500X2 can struggle with formats that have been around for ages?
If you are sure then I will give it a try. I would rather learn this now before I copy everything over and spend ages sorting them and converting straight to mkv.
I just thought that DVD shrink although old was still good? Has always just worked for me.
I don't have any HD stuff yet - is that the reason for h264? I do plan on going HD in the near future, I suppose I just need to take this opportunity to sort out all my old files!

Remuxing using differnt muxing software should be tried first.

Using MKVToolnix, there's a one tool called MKVMergeGUI (GUI for MKVMerge), http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/put your MKV into input file menu, click start muxing, it quite fast - it will remux your video and audio into an MKV file again. try to play this file and post the result here. |

You don't sleep! Thanks for the reply. I did as you said, but it didn't work. The file still won't play in reverse!  What does remuxing like that do to the file? I also ran the resultant file through MediaInfo and got this: General

Try with a short name and short path Your file is located : J:\My Videos\Mede8er\Movies\Animation\_Kyle\Ice Age\03 Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)\Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009) (1).mkv Try to rename it and move it like : J:\movietest.mkv and tell us what this will do. A odd thing : Scan type : Progressive
Scan order : Top Field First If the video is progressive, then it doesn't have a top and bottom field. If it have a top and bottom field, it is not progressive but interlaced. I believe mkvmerge doesn't recognize the video correctly and therefore it write false information about the viideo making it difficult to read by the player. |

Thanks for the idea - I tried moving the file to the root of the drive - no change!
The scan type and order you mention is meaningless to me! Sorry. Any ideas how I can fix it?
This is not the only file I have that does this.

the problem is in encoder... fields problems will stunt you if will be so
turn your video into new file.. re-encode

Major bummer! So you reckon the field problem is the issue? If you guys say that's what I gotta do, then I gotta do it! Better now than later. 1. What software should I use and what codec?
