Hi everyone!

Total newbie here! Tried to play .avi files downloaded straight from my video camera and they won't play.

The .avi files play fine on my PC. Other .avi files I have which are not from the video camera play fine.

I suspect that the .avi files might be somehow different to other .avi files and that the 500X2 can't play them for some reason.

How do I get them to play? I thought the 500X2 was supposed to play .avi files.

Please help  Huh

It will play avi files, but only with a supported codec.
Avi is a container that can have a lot of different video and audio codecs.

The med support a lot different codecs, but not all.

You can check the codec of the avi file with Media Info and compare it with the supported coded list in the mede8er specs on www.mede8er.com

See also my beginners guide:
http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,5489.0.html and look for Where to download Media Info to check file video or audio codec

Thanks for the quick reply!

You are right, MediaInfo says the avi is DV (Sony). I assume that is the codec that is needed to play the files.

So how do I get the files to play?

Can I install the missing codec or do I have to convert the file to something else?

What a pain! I was really hoping to be able to just play my home movies without a lot of converting and fiddling. I never seem to get around to playing my home videos.

You have to convert I am afraid.
There is no way to load a codec like this, as most of the codec support comes from HW chips on HW media players.
There are currently no HW mediaplayers that are able to play DV codec.
You need to convert to another codec.

Search on DV on the forum and you will find simular topics.

Conversion tools can be found here:

Thank you! At least I know what the problem is now.

Btw: I also couldn't get some wmv and wav files to play. I assume it was for the same reason as I just threw them at Any Video Converter and now they play just fine. They weren't important so I didn't take much care, but they came out fine!
