Folder play does not work
« on: June 15, 2011, 06:28:57 PM »
While accessing my media library via upnp (on my NAS), I can browse folders just fine. However, playing dvd folders just does not work. Manual says to use the play button, but nothing happens.

Structure of the DVD folder is fine, it plays OK on other systems. Additionally, playing folder doesn't work for mkv files either. Same for music folders.

What's up? A firmware update or am I doing something wrong. Please help, this way I can't play most of the library

I think the problem is that File Manager has to work with the UPNP server for some functions. Play Folder is not a command the UPNP server understands. You have to go into the folder and play the contents.

If that's the case I may have to return the thing, it apparently also doesn't see my ifo files, so dvd's are useless

What UPNP server are you using? Servers can filter what is shown.

Upnp is a very limited protocol.

Suggest to use samba filesharing, and you will get more functionality.

It's can also be very restrictive though the use of profiles. You end up needing a different proflie for each device on some servers, which is plain rediculous.

Just give us some time and hopefully you will be happy with your X2 when we've finished.

Would NFS be an even better protocol?  I figure it would not only avoid the folder issue but address things like HD performance over wireless.  Or does the MED500X2 Samba manipulation make this unnecessary....which would be nice.

Thanks,

The X2 hosting wireless has the same limitations as the X. The support procossor has to handle the wi-fi on to of the Lan function underneath. So Sanji report about a 30% improvement due to the more powerful precessor compared to the X's poor wi-fi performance. That is still no where near the 40mbps that can easiliy be streamed over cable. NFS isn't going to make that much of a dfference.

We are still  waiting to see what the new PCI-E wi-fi device can do to improve on that.

Jer1, thanks for the clarification.

In the past my solution for making my HD content flow with high stability was to use my wireless N gaming bridge and setup connectivity to my NAS via NFS.   This worked with my SageHD300 and the TVIX6500 I am seeking to replace.  I had just assumed (bad to assume) this would be the best practice for the MED500X2.  I look forward to the results of the PCI-E wifi device.

You can see some user networks  here:-
http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,5537.0.html

NFS was needed when you felt that in order to reach 40mbps you had to get an extra 5% to out of the poor support processor in previous media chips like 1073. The X2 uses the 1185 which is about twice as powerful as the 1073. It blast through the 40mbps barrier with relative ease. Yes, there may be contention  issues which need tweaking, but in bandwidth terms there shouldn't be problems using Lan and the X2 for streaming.

I use a Linksys dual band ethernet to wifi bridge, some simular solution as a gaming bridge you mention. With this solution I am able to stream BR 50 with True HD Audio..... Without any stutter. The same movie over Samba using this wifi solution gives some stutter now and then. NFS really makes a diff for me on the X2 with wifi bridge.
