Just seems a bit odd that i can password protect folders on the mede8er but nothing to stop HDD folders being accessed via a home network.

You can set NAS to off.....

So will this make the HDD drive accessible by just me and not to the whole network ?

No, it is on for all or non with NAS on or off.
The NAS solution on mede8er is just a simple one as described in the manual.

It is hide for all or show for all.

If you want some secure way to enter your internal mede8er disk, you can use ftp.
That can be protected with a password.
