[TIP] Creating a shortcut to your network shares
« on: September 18, 2009, 04:56:48 PM »
Should you be having difficulty seeing your network shares, you can create a shortcut as follows:

o Go to Media Library > Network > 'My Shortcut'
      o Press MENU on the Remote & select ADD;
o Type in your User Name, Password and IP Address

      OR

      o Select DETAIL
o Type in a LABEL for the shortcut
o Type in the USER NAME
      o Type in the PASSWORD
o Type in the DOMAIN / WORKGROUP
o Type in the SERVER (PC) NAME
o Type in the IP ADDRESS

You will cut out a lot of the navigation nonsense and go straight into your shares.

Press enter on the login field and an on-screen virtual keyboard appears.
Use navigation buttons and ENTER to select the letters and select the OK button to finish.

Another newbie question:
Will this also work for NFS shares? What password and loginname should be used?

Hi dikkiedirk,

For NFS shares you use the NFS source option from the Media Library source list - you don't use these types of shortcuts discussed here for NFS shares at this point.
It however is on the cards for future integration into the Shortcuts.

Hi,

This might be a newb questions, but how do I do this with hidden shares? (Those ending with $ on a windows network) There doesn't seem to be an option to type in the shared folder name manually.

Thanks!

Hmmmm... and what exactly would you be hiding in these 'admin' shares that you don't even want people to see that they exist?  :P

This is currently not possibleas admin shares have been masked and hidden (it becomes a bit cluttered if you see all these C$, D$, etc by default), but there is a future project to save full paths as shortcuts and not just shared PCs. This will be placed under consideration when this project is commenced.

LOL, I actually use the $ for 'other' things than my admin shares... and not just pron! ;-)

I let my neighbours use my wireless so they have access to my media downloads, but I would prefer they not have access or visibility to my family pics and home videos folders - although I still want to share them across the network for my own viewing. For now I am using an NFS (haneWIN) for my personal network shares, and have mapped my public ones to my neighbours via the standard workgroup shares.

To that end, I noticed when browsing the network that the default workgroup name for the Mede8er is workgroup... is there any way to change that? I didn't see the option in the network settings area.

Thanks!

Not via the GUI, no - it's on the feature request list somewhere.

There is a hacky method described here but I am not in a position to assist with this...

Hi,

I find this device is a piece of rubbish as a NAS. Everytime you want to do something you have to connect it to a TV or a Monitor, why doesnt it have a web browser? Just an expensive toy to watch Video, with nas as a joke.

There are alot of better devices out there that and are cheaper that at least allows one to connect via a web interface once you have given it a IP. >:(

Took me 3 attemps to get the HD1 icon to appear on the netwrork, using the latest firmware.

Way to go.

Hi kenmeg,

Just some joking...  ;D

Maybe you have the wrong expectation...
The mede8er is build to play media files, it is a mediaplayer not a NAS.  ;)

And just look arround,  you will find out that the mede8er is not really expensive for what it is capable of.

Just my 2 cents...
