Can the med500x be controlled remotely?
« on: October 30, 2010, 11:33:10 AM »
Is there software available with which the med500x can be controlled from a pc?
It would be great to play music or internet radio without the need of a tv.

if not, what's the reason? If it's technically possible, where can I find information about how to program it so I can build something myself?

Thanks

wiki the realtek chip. They have information about sending commands to the linux kernal from a pc. Not very detailed, or elegent.

In the V4 beta firmware there is such an option.

Have a look at the v4 beta software.
The October release.

That's probably not exactly what the OP needs. V4 includes an unfinished 'remote control', but it still requires the Mede8er GUI to be visible on the TV screen so the user can see where he's navigating. Presumably he has his Mede8er connected to an amp for music playback, but doesn't want the TV on just to play music, but still needs to be able to select music tracks. So I guess he would like a Mede8er GUI and perhaps remote control available on his PC screen....not sure if this at all possible.
Mede8er model: MED500X
Board: 1073DD
Bootloader: 0000.0202.1026
Firmware: V4.04 INC_HD Audio
Internal HDD: WD20EADS 3.5" Caviar Green 2TB SATAII 32MB
External USB HDD: Seagate FreeAgent 1TB
Network: Home Plugs (NETGEAR Powerline AV Adapter with Ethernet Switch XAVB1004 bridge)
Router: BT HomeHub V2
Display: Panasonic TX-L37G15B
Audio connection: HDMI to TV
Audio output devic

there exists an all-purpose remote control app for android named andromote, which operates on the basis of the UPNP protocol. unfortunately, Mede8er does not implement the required parts of the UPnP spec, namely the renderer part. If it did, andromote could be used to browse the media content from any UPnP media server in the network, and have the media rendered through mede8er. Browsing can be done on any android device  without the need for a TV.

A list of devices that can currently be controlled through andromote is available at http://www.andromote.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=48&Itemid=56. Mede8ter is not among them.

A web-based remote control is IMO not comparable with the above, as it simply mimics the old-time IR type remote through a different channel. Technology from the last milennium.

regards,
chris

Same for the 400x. Will there be an update available within a reasonable period where DNLA is supported?

I saw the recent update for the X2 series, will this update be available soon for the x-series?

No, there will be no new future features be added to the prev generation X players.
Only new features will be developed on the latest current X 2 gen players.

Nice!

Just bought this player assuming upgrades will come...  :'(

Any suggestions on upgrading the old one with 3rd party software enabeling DNLA on the 400x?

The functionallity is ok, but playing music from a NAS requires the TV, where music browsing is not user friendly with a lot of files...

Thanks for your thoughts!

The function you are looking for is DMR and not DNLA only.
The X2 has that, but the 400X only has Upnp to play from a Upnp server, that is something else.

As an alternative you can make a playlist and start that using the Music button on the remote without turning on the TV.
