Just got my Mede8er!!! Awesome.
In any case, whilst watching, the brightness seems to "flash" up and down. It's not all the time, and I haven't noticed any pattern regarding particular scenes. To imagine, it's if a switch is flipped and the picture brightness toggles higher and normal, as in a torch going on and off.
The tv is a Samsung 50B550 plasma. Hooked up directly via HDMI. Latest firmware on the Mede8er. I have not tried a different port, nor have i tried a re-install of the firmware (hope to avoid this).

Is Eco Mode switched on, on your TV, as that can cause the brightness to increase\decrease.

Eco is off. Thinking there may be a force issue with the Tv's picture settings and the mede8er settings. Does the Mede8er settings take a second seat to the tv settings? will try another port over the weekend and test. Could just be that, but will eliminate one by one.

It's like a brightness flicker. As if you had 2 brightness settings and they jumped between the 2. I have made some progress. I switched HDMI cables, and then fiddled a bit with the mede8er picture settings. It seems to have helped. What i think should be an option, is for the mede8er to have an option to override the picture settings (on) and just passthrough (off). I think there is conflict with the mede8er video settings and how my plasma wishes to show them. It makes sense to have to option to switch them off, cause you may have calibrated your HDMI settings already, and then the Mede8er "pushes" it's settings as well. I will try another HDMI port to test.

There were some problems in the past with the HDMI-CEC option, if I recall correctly? But I'm not sure if they were the same problems.. On Samsungs it's called AnyNet+ if I'm not mistaken..
If your brightness flickering still exists, perhaps check if AnyNet+ is enabled on your HDMI port(s) and if so, disabled it to test again?

Turned off the Anytime setting on HDMI on the TV. Problem Gone!!! No more flicker, no more brightness issue. Now for the new firmware!!!  |

Oh dear.
Update. Brightness flicker problem came back.
Had Samsung replace internal board. Problem still there.
Updated to V.3.0.5, problem still there.
Tried Beta firmware - problem still persistent.
Changed HDMI ports on TV, and replaced HDMI cables.
Have turned ANytime off on TV.
Could it not be a conflict of the mede8er, forcing a brightness/contrast setting into the TV?
Tv: Samsung PS50B550
Mede8er - Bootload ver 23
Streaming over LAN + Internal Harddrive

Does it go away at lower resolutions such as 720p?
Someone else posted having flashing type problems with a samsung TV which went away after going to the V4beta.
You should also search on the WWW for problems with the PS3 and your TV. There are more of them than mediaplayers and seem to create similer problems.

What i have noticed, is the poorer the quality file (old AVI / Xvid) the worse it is. So the opposite applies. The better the file (1080p) the less the problem is there. In general however, the brightness/flicker issue comes when there is a dark scene. I haven't had any issues with my ps3 connected. Only the mede8er. DSTV works fine (SD). I tried out the V4Beta, but i could not access my TV harddrive, and had repeated freezes, so went back to V3.0.5. Will search some more.

Are you using any kind of contrast enhancement setting in the TV? They have plagued playback of poor MPEG-2 DVB-T broadcasts for years. |

good idea, could be related to some correction stuff in the TV.
Try to switch it off and see what happens.
You might consider to switch your Samsung TV to Game mode, as far as I know this will shut off this features then all.

Update:
Turned to Game Mode, no difference. Problem seemed better, but did not last long.
I have no contrast or brightness "boost" settings. All "extra" settings are turned off.
I think i have a faulty unit. Problem is, it's out of warranty now. I was hoping it was just a setting, and have tried for months now to correct it, PLUS waiting for Samsung to replace internal TV boards.
EISH.
Hopefully it can be solved with a firmware update???
