Hi All,

This week I received my Mede8er.
I connected the player to my Sony Bravia KDL 32W5500 (Full-HD) with the supplied HDMI cable.
Video settings to 1080P - 60Hz, Audio HDMI passthrough. My TV is connected to my amplifier with an optical cable.
After I saw that the box was working I installed a Samsung 1TB HD which I formatted with the provided option in the setup menu.
I did some tests by playing various file formats (FLAC, mp3, mkv, wmv, avi etc). These all just played fine. Good image, good sound.
Following the instruction provided with the firmware update 3.0.4 I updated the player. At first everything worked as before, but after I connected the mede8er to my PC to copy some more files and reconnected it to my TV I have several issues:
- It takes the box about 10 times longer to startup. After the initial mede8er logo the screen remains black for 2 minutes or more.
- Several video options are no longer available, among these are the 1080P options. These options appear grey in the list. The best I can get is 1080i.
- I can play video files, but sound setting I choose for HDMI, I have no sound. The problem is not with my TV set, I tried my BDplayer on the same HDMI port an cable and both sound (6ch) and image (1080P) is as expected

After reading several posts here I re-downloaded the firmware and re-installed it according to instructions -> same result. I connected to the box with telnet to do the e2fsck thing, no errors, no result.

Any ideas?

For get sound to optical you should set M8R audio setup to spdif.
I believe something going wrong when you disconnect your M8R from pc.

I think you should format your hdd - maybe is better to do this in pc- then reinstall fw and do a last hdd format from M8R menu.

Try plugging in the yellow composite cable to your monitor and adjust your Mede8er's VIDEO OUT to the desired setting - perhaps the video setting has somehow changed back to HDMI AUTO.

What firmware version was on the Mede8er when you got it? v2.1.0?

Ensure that you install the firmware according to the installation instructions;
Do not restore old settings but rather recapture them;
Unplug power before after successfully installing firmware.

Compare with & without internal HDD (disconnect it for troubleshooting purposes)

Thaks guys,

@tachita: I link sound from my TV because I get sync issues otherwise. I do this through an optical cable because my amp does not support HDMI

@Insomniac: Yes, it has indeed reverted to HDMI AUTO. I will test with the yellow cable later (have to watch a soccer match tonight). Don't know the exact firmware version when I got it, somewhere in the 2.x.x range. I did not try yet without the HDD, will do that also. Any idea about the lack of sound issue?

Your sound issue is not so clear for me.
Please explain your system connection in detail and your M8R setup.

M8R dont have yet sound output on hdmi and spdif simultaneous.
Only analog audio is simultaneous.

Tachita,

HDMI connection from mede8er to TV. Optical connection from TV to amplifier. Mede8er is set to HDMI passthrough.

I have no sound on my TV and no sound on my Amp.

Try plugging in the yellow composite cable to your monitor and adjust your Mede8er's VIDEO OUT to the desired setting - perhaps the video setting has somehow changed back to HDMI AUTO.

I did as you suggested and plugged in the yellow cable (with HDMI disconnected). I was able to adjust settings to 1080P - 60Hz, it was at HDMI AUTO. Powered down, reconnected HDMI. Again it took the mede8er a lot longer to boot. Then I get the menu at lowest possible resolution (480P) and video is set back to HDMI AUTO. After a reboot the setting is 1080i 60HZ, but the settings I can choose from are limited to:
- HDMI Auto
- 480P
- 720P 60HZ
- 1080i 60HZ
All other options are greyed out. Weird thing is when the logo is displayed at startup, my TV tells me it is in 576P, which I cannot choose from the menu.

So, again, I unplugged everything, including the internal HD. Reinstalled the firmware (3.0.4) following the instructions. Exact same result.

Just to make sure the problem is not with my TV, I plugged my Blueray player into the same HDMI port with the same cable and I got 1080P with sound. So it definitely seems to be the mede8er.

I am focussing on video settings at the moment. I suspect HDMI is somehow messed-up so I am hoping  that once this is fixed the sound will also come back .

What else can I do?

Hi wsa1971,

I would suggest you try to go back to the situation where things were working and you had audio.

So downgrade to version 2.1.0, use recovery mode to install this version.
And verify if you have sound back again.

Or even try to downgrade to 2.0.2.

is better to downgrade to v1.2.2a and reformat hdd and then upgrade to v3.0.4.

is very possible that you have some hdd partition coruption.

Thanks for the help guys.

After my last post I downgraded to 2.1.0, same problem.

I took out the harddrive before my previous post, so I don't think that is the problem.

I am starting to get the feeling the HDMI port is somehow broken.

Could be some damaged cable or HDMI connector.
Inspect the cable and HDMI socket for bent pins and be carefull when trying another HDMI cable.
If the socket is damaged, you could damage the cable connector of your other HDMI cable also.

Maybe better to contact your reseller and get your mede8er swapped for a known good one.

Thanks Maasbommel, but I don't think it's the cable. My Blueray does display 1080P with the same cable (on the same port on the TV). I don't see any damage on either cable or port.

Swapping then.... Sad

Hello again.

Just thought I'd let you know that the reseller replaced my faulty unit with a new one within a week. Excellent service!

I upgraded to fw 3.0.4 and still everything plays fine. I think it's save to say that the issue was not with the firmware but with the hardware.

Thanks again for the advice.
