MED cannot connect to shared folders in PC
« on: June 08, 2016, 08:55:35 am »
Hi there. I hope you can help me with a problem I'm facing.
In my previous setup I had an external HDD connected to a NAS and I could easily connect to it from my MED450. But since I started having more than 1 HDD and my NAS wasn't doing well with USB Hubs, I decided to buy a Windows 10 mini PC and connect my USB Hub to it and all my external HDD to the hub.
The setup was simple and all of them were immediately recognized by Win10.
I shared the drive and added all the folder to my Homegroup as suggested in a tutorial I found in this forum.
I also turned off the windows firewall and fixed the IP address.

In my MED I can easily see the WORKGROUP under Network and I within I can see my HDD. The problem is that when I try to access any of the shared folders I'm asked the login and password.
I've tried using the Admin login and password and also a newly created user account (Standard type) both with no luck: whatever I try I get a Login fail error message.
I also tried going to the My Shortcuts area and add there a shortcut using the fixed IP I previously defined. Also no luck, I can see the drive, the folders but when I try to login I get the same error.

Can someone help me?
Thank you.
Pedro

The password error is the "catch all" error for any failed connection. If the shares are set up for guest use then the issue will be local DNS failure. Try changing the DNS Server setting in the player to the router IP.

Hi jer1956.

allow me to add one more thing. I have setup permissions for those folder to Everyone, not a specific Guest account or anything like that. Does that make a difference?

Thanks.

Hi.
I tried setting MED DNS to match the router IP but that didn't work.
I also added the Guest account to the list of authorised accounts...that didn't work either.

Can someone help me? What am I doing wrong? I can access the same drive/folder from my Macbook.

Thanks.
Pedro

Why dont you try NFS as its real easy to setup and better than Samba for network streaming

Thank you Mede8er1.
I have 2 questions:
1. The site for haneWin software mentiones a 30-day trial. Is there a freeware alternative or is this the best suitable option?
2. Windows Defender is blocking this download saying it contains malware. Have you experienced the same?

Thank you once again.

I have experienced it and turned defender off and scanned it with a different scanner, and it would not detect any viruses or malware. That did the trick for me.

This version is even faster with browsing through files than the last in my opinion.

Thanks. I've tried your suggestion with Windows Defender and it worked fine.
So, based on your answer this software is worth the money, right?

In my opinion Hanewin is the best and I have been using it on all versions of Windows through the years with perfect results. I would suggest you use the trial and get everything working and then worry about the purchasing of the software if it nags you.

Hi.
Sadly I need to get back to this topic.
As I mentioned in my previous post I managed to get it to run, but just now I realised one very strange thing: there are some folders that are not caught when scanning the shared folder.
If I access the folder by going through Network - NFS, I can see the folders but with no files inside.
There's nothing strange with the filenames as far as I can see.
Can someone shed some light on what might be causing this?

Many thanks.
Kind regards.
Pedro
