Mede8er v3 teaser
« on: March 18, 2010, 11:15:35 pm »
If you haven't already seen it, there is a new firmware version on its way for your Mede8ers. The devs are putting the final touches to a new skin and bedding down a few new features for your enjoyment.

This V3 firmware generation has been built on a far more stable version of the Realtek SDK that will allow for the use of non-Mede8er-formatted hard drives with several improvements.

Here are a few of the added features our Mede8ers can look forward to:

    * BD ISO and BDMV chapter support
    * Folder lock
    * Watched movie indicator
    * Hard drive spindown
    * New skin
    * Many fixes...

This should be released to the Beta testers soon, and taking their feedback into account this should be released to the public within about 2 weeks thereafter....

Your toys will feel new all over again...

Please note that there have been unforeseen delays in respect of the finalisation of the v3 firmware.

The design elements have been reworked based on feedback received, and various issues that were picked up are in the process of being resolved.

Your patience is requested as the finishing touches are made to this version.
I would like to give a date for final release, but it would be more appropriate to say that this firmware will be released once it is ready.

Update - V3 release delay.

Please note that there have been further delays in the release of the V3 firmware which have come about in part due to feedback received on the new GUI look and feel - some of this feedback revealed that certain elements of the GUI were perhaps too controversial for the market. For this reason Mede8er intends to release two versions of the V3 firmware - one with the new-look GUI and one without - this won't be an ongoing development fork, but rather a once-off to provide the more conservative Mede8er owners with the opportunity to retain the old look, but at the same time get the benefit of the updates and fixes. The 'new look' will be adjusted somewhat based on feedback received from the owners, worldwide resellers and journalists and integrated into the V3 firmware release.

There have been many delays in the release of the V3 firmware to date - anyone involved in development themselves will realise that this is not always a clear-cut path. This is further exacerbated in media player development as there are many role-players involved in the firmware development and much of this is not directly controllable due to the inherent, protected nature of the firmware core.
All SoC developers rely on the chip manufacturers for updates and contributions - Mede8er development too relies on such core code drops and many times tough decisions have to be made to either hold back for a core update, or integrate the GUI and Mede8er-specific code with the current DVDPlayer binary code. These decisions are tough because either you produce a firmware release with known deficiencies, or you hold back for a later core code for further expected updates.

While it is understandable that the most prevalent issue at this point is the V2.0.x requirement that there be an installed Mede8er-formatted internal HDD, Mede8er has now made the decision to release for public download, the V2.1.0 firmware which is the firmware version currently being installed at the factory on new devices. The previous decision to withhold V2.1.0 was originally made based on the imminent release of the V3 firmware, which has since been unavoidably delayed.

The Mede8er team asks for your patience and wishes to assure you that, contrary to popular belief, there really is a V3 firmware due for release within the next few weeks, but this will only be released once the development team is satisfied that this firmware is free of any critical issues.

Version 2.1.0 has been made available for download in the Downloads section of this forum:
