Just an update on this...
I bought an Ethernet line testing unit online and it arrived today so I got to work testing out all the gigabit cables around the house. I don't know why I didn't use this device earlier because it has made the job soooo much easier and I advise anyone who is planning to lay Ethernet cables around their home to get one. Best $15 I ever spent.
Anyway, after a lot of mucking around with the cables I could pin point which of the 8 wires weren't connected right as the device would light up the problem ones. Too easy! The only issue I have now is when I screw the wall plate back into the wall which has the gigabit keystones attached, the problem arises again...with the plate hanging off the wall, everything is sweet and I get gigabit lan. I just have to feed it all back in without any kinks in the line and I should be sweet.
One thing I learnt is that gigabit cables are super sensitive. They have to be terminated just right without any interference otherwise they just wont work and it will divert to 100mbps.
I have tested it all out though with a few movies and I'm happy to report that I can now stream full quality frame packed MVC MKV bluray files over Samba perfectly without stutter or buffering.
My setup is:
- Windows 8.1 PC connected via standard onboard intel gigabit lan.
- Netgear Nighthawk 7000 router.
- 30m of gigabit cabling in wall. Additional 3m of cabling from wall to Mede8er.
Good cabling also makes a difference. One of my cables simply would not give a gigabit connection...had to swap it over with a different cable to get it to work.
With that all working now, I will use my existing old gigabit router as an access point / switch to the Mede8er and the HTPC in the cinema room and see if I can still stream perfectly...if not, I will leave it as is.
Thanks for all the help guys.
Cheers.
