Or you might have some bad wire within the bundle of 8.... Have you verified all 8 wires are ok?

I'm a bit worried I might have a bad cable. I have 3 cat6 cables going from my PC room to various other rooms in the house. 2 of them are 30m long and go from upstairs to downstairs rooms. Both of those cables are only reading at 100mbps. The other cables is 20m long and just goes from one room to another without much bends. That one is giving me a Gigabit connection as it should.

I'm thinking because the other 2 cables have a lot of corners and cavities to navigate around maybe they are kinked or something...

Was this a home install?  A professional should have proved Gbit was working to you.

another thing that can be an issue also - are those cables running close to power lines?
That can gererate noice and overspeak on the cable.

They were installed by the electrician when the home was getting built. They didn't test them at the time, nor did they terminate them at the wall...i did that myself. They aren't running close to the power cables either. I made sure of that when thy installed them.

Some additional info:

sharp bends are not advised and might cause failures. The cable has to run smoothly, also in the wallsockets of the termination points.
Wires are twisted in pairs for a reason, each pair has a dedicated function in the gigabit transmission.
One pair is used to connect 1 and 2 of the wallsockets on each side, another pair for 3 and 6, one for 4 and 5, one for 7 and 8.
You have to stick to this, or it might fail to get to gigabit speed.

Its like whenyou look at external fire rresistant ducting for lan cables. Right hand bends look like something from a model train set, as sharpe bends are not allowed. You cant run them into simple corner boxes and bend sharpely.

And last but not least: don't cross the wires between wallsockets, 1 always connects to 1, 2 connects to 2 etc.
If you need a cross-cable somewhere, do that between equipment and wallsocket, otherwise you will be in for confusion somewhere.
With the modern network equipment, you don't even need cross cables anymore, they have a feature called MDIX which figures out automatically whether to create a cross internally or not.
Very handy and hardly more expensive any longer.

Yeah if I can't get the gigabit working I will just transfer all my media to the HTPC in my theatre and connect the Mede8er straight to it via gigabit. I tested it out earlier and the 3D movies play flawlessly with Samba. I would have liked to keep them on my file server upstairs as I just upgraded it to cater for a heap of storage, but oh well...it's probably better to have all the media in the theatre anyway...less chance of error.

Just an update on this...

I bought an Ethernet line testing unit online and it arrived today so I got to work testing out all the gigabit cables around the house. I don't know why I didn't use this device earlier because it has made the job soooo much easier and I advise anyone who is planning to lay Ethernet cables around their home to get one. Best $15 I ever spent. :)

Anyway, after a lot of mucking around with the cables I could pin point which of the 8 wires weren't connected right as the device would light up the problem ones. Too easy! The only issue I have now is when I screw the wall plate back into the wall which has the gigabit keystones attached, the problem arises again...with the plate hanging off the wall, everything is sweet and I get gigabit lan. I just have to feed it all back in without any kinks in the line and I should be sweet.

One thing I learnt is that gigabit cables are super sensitive. They have to be terminated just right without any interference otherwise they just wont work and it will divert to 100mbps. :(

I have tested it all out though with a few movies and I'm happy to report that I can now stream full quality frame packed MVC MKV bluray files over Samba perfectly without stutter or buffering.

My setup is:

- Windows 8.1 PC connected via standard onboard intel gigabit lan.
- Netgear Nighthawk 7000 router.
- 30m of gigabit cabling in wall. Additional 3m of cabling from wall to Mede8er.

Good cabling also makes a difference. One of my cables simply would not give a gigabit connection...had to swap it over with a different cable to get it to work.

With that all working now, I will use my existing old gigabit router as an access point / switch to the Mede8er and the HTPC in the cinema room and see if I can still stream perfectly...if not, I will leave it as is.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Cheers.

Buy another and give it to your electrician.  ;) :D

Glad you got to the bottom of it.

A link to your $15 well spent? I might need one in the future, as I'm going to rewire my mom's house with cat 6 cable.
