Because it seems most people on here can't get 3D MKVs to play smoothly over Samba and had to revert to NFS. You're definitely the first person Ive heard of on here who has been successful with it.

Your sig says youre using a NAS with NFS?

Yes, my NAS is set up to use NFS for my movie folders.

I used SAMBA for about ½ year after I got 3D compatible equipment and had no issues with 3D MKVs.

A good quality nas  will always perform better then a basic pc  that is used for generic  use.
Synology is one of the best  brands around for a consumer.
Nfs is still  the best performing network protocol  for streaming. Samba is more suitable for generic file sharing activities, not for large files streaming.
It will only perform better than Nfs  for large amounts of small  file copy / transfers.

My PC is pretty much a server, so not really basic. It currently has 13 hard drives in it. So theres no way I'd bother with a NAS setup to accommodate that level of storage. And this PC's sole purpose is a media server and is far more powerful than a NAS.

But its got microsoft bloatware on it.   A NAS dosnt have to be using a Microsoft Samba server.  Samba is about sharing, not streaming. It doesnt matter how powerful the host CPU is, microsft samba dosnt want to  allocate all the resources to  one activity.

If that is its sole purpose,  try booting with a CD/DVD Linux build instead.

I shall see if I can  find one that does...Ubuntu server only installs.

A nas is most of the time built on a more light weigth linux os.
Which is far better on network performance in most cases as the OS on the nas is already tuned for what it is built for: delivering data over the network......

A PC OS is built for a more generic purpose, not specific to perform on delivering performance over the network as a file server.

A PC built with a real NAS OS on it can be compared with a dedicated NAS, a generic pc with windows client os running on it not.

I've used a 2 drive NAS early on on my network and it different offer me anything or perform any differently than the Windows client. So when I begun adding more space, I gave up on NAS...just couldn't justify it when I saw no real world gains.

Using a NAS didn't solve the 3D MVC MKV issue either (which is leading me to believe it might be the router as you have suggested)

Suffice to say I haven't had any drama's streaming any of my other media over Samba. While a Linux based system would be the best option, I've had no reason to move to that since everything else is playing beautifully, even with several other clients on at the same time.

hi,

i have a question. Which Nas should I use with my 600er? I want to stream HD movies and series, mostly mkv, only 2d. Sometimes I listen to Music. Overall 3 Person have direct access to the nas. I have read about Synology DS 115 and 115j. Which one should I buy. Or other recommendations?

I recently purchased the QNAP TS-431. I chose it over Synology because it is Linux-based rather than Windows. I stream via NFS and am really pleased with it. Since I will be using it for many purposes I bought the 4-bay model (though only have 1 6TB drive installed so far.) If you don't want 4 bays, the TS-231 is identical but has only 2. On Amazon in the US today, the 231 is around $240 and the 431, $335.

The operating system of Synology, called DSM, is linux based as well.

Thanks, I didn't know that. My son's Synology (DS-421) sure acts like Windows; the QNAP seems to me much more intuitive and a whole lot less cumbersome, so that's a very interesting fact, TonP.

Which manufacturer to choose is difficult, I guess.
I don't know any other brand than Synology, I have two of them, the DS213 and DS214.
Very happy with it, no problems whatsoever with streaming video (with NFS) to my 600X3D and streaming music to my Logitech Squeezebox Duet.
Since I have spent quite a lot of effort in photo's and home-made software, I use RAID on both NAS-es and yes, I had a diskfailure once which was tackled by the RAID setup  without data-loss.
I replaced the faulty HDD and the NAS took over instantly and repaired things.
As far as I am concerned, I would recommend Synology to anyone, but that is my personal opinion ofcource :)
By the way, HDD prices are increasing nowadays, so don't wait too long with buying your NAS.

You shouldn't just think a nas is a shared source. It can also keep data more secure from drive failure.  A twin bay unit can only do that by running two identical disks....that is you are only using 50% of the capacuty. Now with three drives you can run raid5, and that only needs one disk to host rebuilding data,  not a clone.  So you are using 66% of your capacity. So it is more effincient in terms of capacity usage......but less efficient in terms of throughput as the rebuild data has to be created and written. That can be compensated for by moving up a model in the performance range.

There are few  3  drive units, so you have to get a 4 drive unit aand fit 3 drives.

Multi core arm based broadcom ac chips.

Both Maasbommel and I are now using the Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

whether these new netgear jars how good possibility to adjustment.I'm not pleased with these  some new "smart products" for dummies.
Which is not just left to the user the opportunity to do anything compare eg linksys ea-6700
,which is fully crap device.
