Which NFS server to use?
« on: December 11, 2014, 04:43:56 AM »
Hey all,

I downloaded and setup HaneWin NFS server and it worked fine. However, I could only use it for a 30 day evaluation period. Now it's expired.

Are there any other free NFS servers which people are using? I've tried searching the net but can't really find anything.

Something similar to hanewin with a GUI would be good...

Cheers

If hsnewin on your PC is doing a good job, paying for it is a lot cheaper than buying an actual nas!

Well, I was struggling to play 3D MVC MKV's via NFS. So I wont drop any money until I try out other clients and/or sort the issue out.

I can stream standard MKV's via a standard network connection. But it wont stream the 3D ones so I tried an NFS connection to see if it will work better....it didn't. But I wanna try some others out and maybe tweak some settings..

If you have problems with hanewin the issue is likely to  be elsewhere.  Post more details of the rest of your network.

I have my media stored on a Windows 8.1 PC connected to a gigabit router which is connected to the Mede8er all with Cat6 cable - so a full gigabit network. I have disabled Jumbo Frames in the TCP/IP settings in Windows.

I have tested a standard 2D film with a high bitrate (Star Wars EP1 - 35.1mbps bitrate) and it plays fine without any stutter. But when I try to play a 3D MVC MKV with the same bitrate (Amazing Spider-Man - 35mbps) it buffers constantly...

Any idea's?

Hello ,

I have the same issue (even with hanewin) and I prefer to store the high bitrate movie like 3D BD ISO on internal HDD on med1000x3d. That are the only files that i prefere to store internally. If I convert the movie to mkv then I can streami it from PC :)

      Regards,

Gbit is just an interface standard. We know the player can't fully exploit it due to lack of CPU power, and the same is true of many routers with Gbit sockets.  Recent high performance routers make it clear streaming HD video is the reason they exist. They have much more CPU power than your typical gbit home office router.

After recent driver changes on my PC I can stream "two" 3d MVC mkv's using hsnewin on a win 8.1 PC. Its mainly down to the power of the router.

What do those routers have in them which make them better for streaming?

Multi core arm based broadcom ac chips.

Both Maasbommel and I are now using the Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

Do you think this would fix the bottleneck of the Mede8er processor for streaming 3D?

Cheers, I'll check it out.

I still don't understand why a 3D movie with the same bitrate as a 2D movie has buffering problems. What is so different about the 3D? shouldn't it just come down to bitrate?

The CPU in the p!ayer has more work to do dealing with  MVC. You have to achieve very low lan loadings , as that means lan handling on the players CPU has shorter wait times, which is wasted time.

Think of the network as two conveyor belts, the join being the router. It didn't matter how fast the conveyor belts run, the bottlenecks are how quickly storemen put boxes on and off at each end, and transfer them across in the middle.

Changing to an uber router means going from one overweight guy to two Olympic athletes moving the boxes between the 2 conveyors.

So if the mede8er has to process the MVC and it struggles with that, then how can a router fix it? I thought all they do is pass the file over to the mede8er...?

No, there is no hardware acceleration for I/o in the player. Its all simple interfaces with CPU intensive drivers. You have to make sure the CPU can manage all tasks.

Reducing the lan loading means leaving enough CPU time to process what is coming across. A more powerful router dosnt just improve the throughput, it does so at lower loadings.
