400X2 NO subwoofer from mp3 stereo
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:09:24 PM »
Hi everyone. As the title says, when I try to listen an mp3 (source 2.0) with the 400X2 the subwoofer is silence, even if with my A/V receiver is set to stereo (that means the sub should sound)
i I listen the same mp3 with the computer (with VLC media player) the sub sounds!

Is VLC creating 2.1 rather than stereo?  Do you play stereo on your amp in 2.1 mode or true stereo? If you  have full range front speakers most amps will only use 2.0 mode for stereo and never use the sub woofer.   If you don't it's the amp  which  has to  filter out the bass for the subwoofer, not the source. For that  to happen you must set the front speakers to Small to  enable the subwoofer filtering. If you  don't the amp  will send full range to  the small front speakers and the audible bass will be negligable.

wait wait: first of all I've small speakers and I set the crossover in the amp (onkyo 507) to 100 Hz.
On my amp I'm playing with Stereo (I don't think I have true stereo too).

How can I see if  VLC is creating a 2.1?

However, the 400X2 with this options and the same source (mp3) doesn't make sound the sub!

But have you set up  the amp to  say  the front speaker "are" Small, rather than Normal or Large?  If you leave them on Large  then stereo bass is not sent to  the subwoofer no matter what  setting you  have for the filter.     When  you select stereo on your amp do  you see 3 channels activated, or just the 2 main speakers?   On my Yamaha amp  the little GUI image shows what speakers will be used,  not what  the source is.  So if I set Large for the Front, selecting Stereo just results in the 2 front speakers being shown.  If I set them  to Small, I get 2 front speakers, and the subwoofer shown.

I have an Onkyo NR 509 - no issues like this.
Do you mean the light on your subwoofer stays red and not goes to blue?

Even if you turn the volume up?

How is the volume setting on your mede8er?
Is it on 31?

Please also post your Onkyo audio settings.

yes sure, on my amp the speakers are set to small!
On my amp it is no possibile to see how many channels are sounding...I just can see the source and the mode listening

well all the speakers are set to small;
crossover of the onkyo is set to 100 Hz;

I've never seen the options of the volume in the med8ter; does the player influence on the perfomance? even if I listen a source 5.1 and make a bitstream?

Well I changed my Yamaha setup to make the front Small, and the woofer symbol  appeared on the amp  gui, and when I went close to  the woofer it  is  indeed being used when playing an mp3. As soon as I reset to Large the amp stopped using it.   So you have a setup issue, in the player, or amp, or both.

I've turned the volume to 31 and now the subwoofer sounds even if it is very very low  :( but it's a problem that I know I have.
the audio settings are in passthrough via HDMI

So your subwoofer is working now and your issue you had is solved - right?
