Nas not available when device is turned off.
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:52:21 PM »
Hello,

I am quite new here, but after reading half of the forum I still can't find an answer to a question I have.

I've got a 500X and Nas configured to connect to several pc's. This is working fine, however when the Medi8er is turned off it dissapears from the network and I am not able to reach the harddrive.

I am quite familliar with mediaplayers and network attached storage, but this would not be normal behaviour in my opinion or am I missing something.

I was unable to find anything on this topic on the internet.

I understand that Pietjuhbel has two separete devices: the Med and the NAS server "a 500X and Nas". Is that the point?
If a Med as a Nas - then eentje is totally correct.

If you turn a NAS off it also  disapears from the Network.    The OP is mistaking "OFF" for "Power ON Standby", where a NAS is sitting waiting to process WOL.

Alright I'm sorry my question wasn't really clear.

The thing is, when the NAS function on the med500x is turned on but the device is in standby mode I am unable to connect to the hard disk.
Which is strange because a NAS should always be reachable whether the device is on or in standby.
My previous mediaplayer was a Popcorn Hour A-100, with which I did not have this problem. When the device was in standby I was always able to read/write from and to the disk. The disk just started on connecting to the device.

For instance, I was planning to have another mediaplayer in the bedroom with no disk in it, and I was planning to just stream from the one to the other.
Now I first have to go downstairs to power up de Med before being able to use the other media player.

Realtek  do not make clones of sigma chips.   There is no power on standby mode that  runs the NAS.  It is power off standby, with only the remote being processed by the motherboard.

Also any NAS needs a powerful CPU. You shouldn't upgrade to  a 3d media player and expect the samba function to  stream  3d movies between 2 players.

Alright, that answers my question, sad to hear though.
This makes the Nas function kind of useless. Or you need not have problems with keeping the device turned on 24/7.

Thanks for the answer!

The NAS function is there just to copy things to the disk (media to play) - a simple NAS function.
It is not a full featured NAS and meant to use so.
