You can  do  that with any player. It doesn't need HD emulation.

Ok. Just suggesting a solution to OP to play retail disks.

An earlier poster made out you needed a drive with HD emulation to play  retail disks, and even  that  it would work  directly connected to  the player.  We can't confirm  that...

Once you shift to  the drive attached to a PC then any drive will  do. I just wanted to make that point clearer.

Understand. I don't have any experience with Hard Drive Emulation. At least we know that there is a workaround to play retail disks with the Mede8er.

Well, thats not exactly what I said...

In my ingenuity (or not), I was thinking that if I connected a regular USB Blu-ray writer/player to the Mede8er USB port, I would be able to play Blu-ray commercial discs. Jer told me it wasnt possible and I asked about that HD emulation thing.

So, HD emulation DOESNT WORK AT ALL, I already tested it, and if it works will only play what the device can handle. It's a feature just for Smart TV's...

But, when connecting the Samsung 506BB USB Blu-ray writer/player to the Mede8er, a DVD icon shows in the media section. When clicking on the DVD icon I access the Blu-ray device. If a disc is inserted, when clickin, Med asks if I want to browse contents or play the disc. It plays fine the decrypted dvd's. I dont have any decrypted blu ray disc to test. Commercial DVD's and Blu ray discs, the Mede8er plays them BUT only a BLACK SCREEN SHOWS. I can pause and resume, always with a black screen. I i hit STOP and PLAY, asks me if I want to resume the last PLAY.

One thing is  when a Blu rey disc is inserted, the icon is still a DVD icon.

Dont know what you guys think about this, and I dont understant much about this subject, but I think this drive should behave like an ordinary standalone blurey player. The player should have the decryption keys for DVD and Blurey discs so it should play when connected to the Med... Or an app is needed? If so, is it possible to make it work on a firmware version???

riaanstrydomza said earlier that has an external blurey drive that connects to the Med and plays everything, including commercial Blurey discs... Thats what I'm after too.

Med's have never supported the playback of encrypted media. You might not believe  it, but  media companies don't take kindly to rip players with decryption.  They are always looking for new ways to make that impossible, such  as cinavia, which stop playback of media not on an optical drive.  You can't make licenced bluray  code with decryption, and without cinavia.

It wasn't a Mod who  said HD emulation was the answer to  everything.   You seem to be implying where responsible for you  buying a drive which  doesn't do  what  you expected.  If you could get an  external USB optical drive with built-in decrptyion it would advertised as a fanstastic new product and demand would be huge, as would the reviews.  There is nothing like that on the web...

No way, Jer, never said that nor implying anything. I'm just trying to understand things and I'm giving feedback of my tests for future reference.

As I said, I think it would be cool if a dvd/bluray drive could be connected to the Mede8er and play commercial titles. Mede8er recognises the drives.

I think the decryption keys should be on the DRIVERS END, not in Mede8er. Where are the decryption keys / codes of the standalone DVD/Bluray players? Must be in the players so people can watch movies, right?

No one has made a USB player with built in decryption....because it would be a miracle product for rip players.  BD.org decide what  can or cannot be made for the legit market, and they hate rip players and do everything they can to  stop  them  from  working.

So  you have to have to have both a BD player and a rip player, as separate units, or build your own HTPC to  do both.  In that  case you take the responsibilty for functions your HTPC has...legal or otherwise.

The x3d uses AVCHD 2.0 camcorder code, which  doesn't need decryption. The playback of home movies is a legitimate use for a Media Player.

...if the user choses to play ripped media  with it..that is  down to  them.

Maybe Im missing the point on the decryption, but here is my steps

Lg 5.25" bluray writer in external chassis connected to med450x2 via usb
Take Avatar (bluray bought from Makro - pretty sure they didnt sellq me the r20 corner special) and place it inside opened tray
Close tray and wait for disc icon to appear
Tap ok and play disc
Enjoy a damn good movie....

I can also confirm this works. Before my 1000X3D and HTPC, I had similar setup on my 500X (the LG BDR is now in the HTPC) and it played commercial disks. Only issue was that it was region locked to SA (Zone 2). You can change the region in Windows, but I think only 5 times.

Take in mind that SDK X2 is not the same as X3D. So what works on one could not be working on other.

Interesting.. I've been following this thread closely..

..so to recap..

..Riaan and Francois both confirm playing Retail Blu-ray Discs through 5.25" LG drives in external chassis connected to X2 devices.. The 450x2 and 500x respectively..

..Jer1956 says that all RIP playing devices shouldn't be able to do this because there is no built-in decryption and won't ever be as the opposition is too powerful..

..Mik3R confirms that his Device has playback issues i.e. Black screen.. On a 800X3D I assume..

So I ask Either:

1. Jer1956 could you please confirm that you meant ALL devices and that Francois and Riaan just got lucky? Or we're you only referring to X3D devices?

OR, Alternatively

2. Francois.. Since you mention that it worked on your 500x could you please do an experiment for the sake of the forum and temporarily remove your LG blu-ray drive  from your HTPC to test on your 1000X3D.. And should this work could you please specify your firmware version, drive model, and external chassis details?

Looking forward to the responses
Thanks

Joolay,

Unfortunately I do not have the external USB box anymore, it was killed by lightning power surge. I have the same drive in my PCH C-200 (sorry for swearing on the forum) which will be easier to get out as my HTPC is in use 24/7. I will hunt through my boxes of spares to see if I have a Sata to USB cradle to do the test on the 1000 and report back.

Cheers,

Francois

Ok, found a Sata cradle and connected BD drive which was in PCH. I am afraid no luck on 1000X3D. See attached image. I must repeat that the same disc plays via network from HTPC's shared BD drive. Bear in mind this is a retail disc, backed up discs play fine.

Ok.. Thanks Francois and Mik3R for your efforts

I think that gives us a clearer answer now.. What may have been possible on X2 devices (based on Francois and Riaan's past success) is definitely not possible on X3D devices for retail discs but possible for decrypted copies.. Only way is to share BD from PC..

..Mik3R perhaps your black screen playback was due to incompatible codec with your non-commercial disc?

..I assume the PC is decrypting the data before streaming to the Mede8er?

..and if X2 devices were able to play them before there's no guarantee that won't change with newer firmware.. As well as the fact that the latest Blu-ray Discs now come in 3D which X2 devices wouldn't be able to handle but most discs apparently are backwards compatible.

..with the media industries blocking these features in rip players it just encourages people more to download bd rips instead of buying or hiring the discs. Let's face it rips will always be around. This in turn will put more pressure on internet bandwidth and decrease the profitability of bd production thus keeping their prices high and impractical for many people leading to the inevitable collapse of the bd industry. So really it's in their best interests to let rip players decrypt!

...Of course the powers that be will never read this post so I'm just ranting now

...guys do Commercial DVD's have the same problem or is it just bluray?
