Gapless Tracks
« on: March 12, 2014, 12:46:26 PM »
Hi

I have a lot of records where tracks merge into one and other , typically Pink Floyd and many classical etc. Does Mede8er support these gapless tracks.

Currently I have a laptop running music with J River Media centre . This handles just about anything , CUE & FLAC etc and CUES that have been split with CUETools into individual tracks. As  it gets to any transition , its as if I am listening the CD , as I would expect.

For Video I have the 1000X3D , which I find great . I would like one system, but when I listen gapless tracks , I get Gaps .

Also when I listen a typical gapped CD especially older ADD transfers , I get a "digital silence" between tracks which is very disconcerting. I don't get that with my Lap Top system.

I suppose it doesn't help that I am listening primarily on headphones and good ens at that (Sennheiser HD800)

Can this be fixed or am I stuck with 2 systems ?

Mike

No, there`s still no solution for the gapless problem .... :'(

There are some ways to `work around` to get gapless ... but to difficult and cumbersome for most (including me).

According to med it`s a hardware (realtek chip) limitation. I`m not sure about that ... hell, there`s a software solution for just about anything!
I`m waiting for a year now, hoping for a firmware solution ... don`t think there will be any... mede8er`s accent seems to be on movies/films, keeping serious music lovers in the dark. :-[

I believe Popcorn Hour`s A-400 play gapless.

The Realtek chipset lacks processing power to play seperate flac files gapless back-to-back. A lot of mediaplayers use this chipset and have the same issue. The problem lies in refreshing the GUI and continue playing from one file to the next.

The next best thing is to use single flac file/cue sheet combination. All tracks need to be joined together in one single file. The cue sheet contains the track information.
On the x3d this still gives causes a gap when jumping from one "track" to the next. Again this is caused by the refreshing of the GUI.

Please correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't there a fix for this on the x2 series with one of the latest firmware updates?

Yes..it was fixed but  the cover art drops back  to  the default cd logo after the first track. So  what some post as an  x2 bug could be the reason why flac/cue is gapless on the x2.

But it's not really a problem of the processing power because a lot DVD/BD players with less powerful processors can do it.

difficult? Cumbersome? With foobar2000 joining tracks and creating a cue sheet at the same time is a breeze.

My Marantz receiver has its own built-in network player and can play seperate tracks gapless. But it has a really crappy interface compared to the jukebox of the Mede8er.

It still uses a server doesn't it? My Denon uses Windows Media Player or some other of your choice.

This sounds pretty pointless to me because if the PC does have to be powered on in order to use wmp it should be simpler just to plug your PC via HDMI to your AVR directly. It's just the same nonsense like using the Ps3 as media player while letting the Pc transcode all the time and do most of the work anyway.

It's a function called Network Play and plays music from my Mede8er's HDD over the network.

Surprising that an AV receiver can play gapless while a dedicated mediaplayer can't.

Thanks for all the learned comments

I guess I have to keep 2 systems as music quality Is the paramount issue. The span of music is very wide from Classical to Rock etc so quite demanding on any system.Using an external DAC rather than the one built into the amp does give a better reproduction.

In my tests , running the coax output from the Mede8er to my external DAC provided a sound almost indistinguishable from the PC to DAC (by USB) , both being better than the amp decoding alone. I use a Direct setting on the amp which by passes the tone controls etc so its as good as a power amp.

The only place the Mede8er fell down was the gaps between tracks , which from the above seem inevitable for the moment

Sadly the Mede8ers DAC was noticeably worse than the external DAC , not surprisingly as the DAB cost more that the Mede8er

Since all tracks are from the same album anyway, there is no real need to refresh the album cover with every track. Maybe it's an idea to "freeze" the album cover while playing the album?
