1000 hdd in an 500x2

Is it possible to use a hdd formatted, in a 1000x3d, containing data, in a 500x2, without having to reformat ?

IT would appear that it is not possible. I am currently  backing up the data so that I can refomat it in the 500x2.
The 500x2 does not recognise the drive.
