I have to disagree. It is widely known that black on white is one of the most readable styles. Just look at this website (and just about any other)...readable due to the black on white. or off-white or some other light color. White text can get very lost on a semi-transparent picture, especially on certain pictures depending on how light the background is. Just look at the screenshot on the second post of the first page of this thread...sure the bad resolution amplifies the effect, but I've seen so many themes that have this color scheme for the text and theyhave a lot of trouble making it clearly readable. Black on white can be set up in a very stylish way if you do it right. I've seen it done on one of the templates out there, and it was both extra readable and stylish.
Actually, you have to adjust based on display type, and the rest of the brightness on the screen. Think about it. If you are looking at a glaring white screen, then you practically blind to read the text. If on the other hand the white is just tuned down a bit, so it is really a very light grey then black text becomes very readable. Likewise if you are staring at an all black screen, then the white text will be so glaring it is like looking into a flashlight when on and trying to make out details about the bulb. It might be possible, but definitely not easy.
Different types of TV's have different displays and effect the eyes differently. e.g. What may be unreadable on my plasma, might look great on an LED, or visa versa. And what I want for my projector again my be completely different.
The best approach is too add a couple of configuration options and let us pick what we want. It would be better if that could be done by the actual viewer, but if static images are used then we would need to settle with the person running the scanning making reasonable decisions.
