The issue is not raw speed, but "efficiency", minimising the handshaking and wait states so  that the CPU can do more useful things like actually process the media and send it to  the codec chip.   The 1186 is on the edge of it's abilities streaming 3d.

If TCP works better it's because of it's error correction. But TCP working at it's best is  less efficient than UDP. So TCP can never work as well as UDP working on a low error rate network.

Aaahh, right OK. So the Boxee CPU processes it better than the Mede8er does.

The main reason i've changed to a new streamer is because apparantly the Boxee Box has lots of drop outs with TrueHD. Hopefully I won't have the same problem with the Mede8er. I'm not particularly interested in 3D so hopefully this will do for me until a more powerful version is released?

Thanks

Dene

It's not a question of better.  It has more spare power.  So it can get away with say "wasting" 60% of it's CPU time handling an error prone network..and still have adequate time in the remaining 40% to process it.

That 40% is not enough for the 1186. So to get more time you have to reduce the wasted time from the 60% the Boxee could cope with to  something less.

So if you had problems with the boxeee..using a less powerful  device isn't going to fix it if the issues where due to  the network.

The fact TCP is better for you  does indicate UDP was having to perform re-sends as it doesn't support error correction.  The bottom line is though, you really need a low error rate network that doesn't need much  error correction, and hence can use UDP.

If you can sort that out..you might find your Boxeee works as you hoped as well.

There might another reason why Udp not works properly. Some cheaper NAS boxes or switches in between just don't have a proper implementation of Udp......

E.g we have seen people with a Synology NAS having simular issues.
Others with same NAS not.

Reason: the switch in between NAS and mede8er not able to stream Udp properly.

You are going to end up being my new best friend at this rate ;-)

Changing to TCP solved the problem :-) Thank you!

I don't want to keep pestering you but do you have any idea how I now direct YaDIS to this NFS share?

Thanks

Dene

With Yadis running from a pc you just keep using the samba paths.
See: http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/topic,10520.0.html

Or do you mean the NFS path for the Agregated Jukebox setup?

Far better to have two explanations than none at all. Both imply that you need to get better UDP out of your network.

Yes indeed. You've both been very very helpful today. These forums are brilliant :-)

Well, the filelink generated by YaDIS at the moment is:

<filelink>smb://192.168.1.110/Volume_1/HD Movies 1/10 Years</filelink>

And obviously I want to change that path to the new NFS shares. but I can't see that to add it in the yaDIS setup:

That NFS path is only needed for agregated Jukebox purpose and different for every other brand nfs server.
You need to check the manual for that.

Another option is to use the program made by RobinC:
http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php/board,147.0.html

This program can read the path from a mede8er config file that has been placed on an usb stick.
You can use that program to get insight in the right nfs path syntax you can put in the Yadis Dune path.

And the other path under folder you show in the picture can stay the same. Yadis need the samba path to access your nas. The mede8er uses the NFS path you configure, not Yadis.

You have to be using Dune mode for Aggregation. Then you get a DunePath...

Mede8er mode is for  a standard stand alone jukebox.

I suggest you read the Phase 1 Aggregation Guides again.

Sorry, but I am very new to this.

I have already created an aggregated jukebox in YaDIS using Dune mode across 2 SMB network shares and all works great.

However, as I now want to use NFS, I want to rescrape the information on those shares BUT I don't know how to direct YaDIS to those new shares I have setup in my NAS settings as I don't know how to see them when I click ADD in the YaDIS setup.

Does that make sense?

Please read my message 2 posts up.
To get the right NFS path in stead of the SMB: path you can use the program of RobinC....

Check the last 2 pages of his manual and you understand what I mean with reading the config file to get the right path.

One last thanks to you guys for all the help the past couple of days.

I used RobinC's program and now I have a fully functioning jukebox sharing over NFS with 30Gb BluRay rips playing back beautifully.

happy happy  ;D

Cheers

Please don't forget RobinC for this very nice program he made - it is adding a lot value to the med8er community tool section. Amazing what he did and how fast he is to release new versions of it.
