How about H.265?
« on: January 31, 2013, 10:40:45 am »
Been using media players for some time. My first of note was an MviX which I eventually gave up on for it's lack of h.264 support, which brought me to my mede8er which I've been delighted with for a couple years.

4.0.5 seems to be a "FINAL" version of the firmware so I'm wondering if I'll be left looking for a new player again when and if h.265 gets a foothold in the same way h.264 became the favoured codec...

Anyone know if there'll be a new codec release (and/or if the hardware can handle it, which I doubt)?

Chip makers can't add new  codecs to their chips. mpeg-2 and h264 are going to be the standard for many years as long as dvd and bd are around. h264 didn't replace mpeg-2 because dvd still uses it. So even if h265 is better for other applications it would create user confusion if BD was to  adopt it.  So just like mpeg2 contiunes after 20 years due to DVD, then so will h264 due to bd.

So the need for h265 will come from elsewhere.
