We have been having a lot of users having issues with WORKGROUP shares in Win7. I prepared this guide for Win7 32 bit and will need someone to varify if it works for Win7 64bit.

I have win7 64 bits installed.
Cheers!

Hi bogdanbz
Someone needs to check why the workgroup share procedure is different on Win7 64 bit. Unfortunaltely I only have 32 bit version so I cannot help with this.

so, on Win7 32bits it is working?
I will try to find out how to resolve this problem on 64bits. I'll do more test and i'll post here the results.
Thanks!

If you use v2.0.2 it works perfectly. I have two Win7 32bit PC's on my network and they have new virgin installs without any registry changes and it really works well.
If you really do not come right I suggest
a) Try using the Guest Account method
http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php?topic=794.0
b) Use HaneWIN NFS as it works better than Samba for streaming speed and it overcomes the Win7 Security issues.

Hi Mede8er1
I've tried this method on win7 64 bit and it doesn't work for me either. When you try to connect from the mede8er it connects to the win7 pc ok but no shares show up. I suspect it is because win 7 64 bit won't accept what is in effect an anonymous login as authority to access shares - only a guess here so please don't shoot me if I'm wrong :'(
The way I connect to my win7 pc is very much as you have detailed with the following exceptions:
At step 3 I turn ON password protected sharing (this is for my own particular security reasons)
At step 12 instead of everyone I choose the user name I login to the the pc with
Now when I go to the mede8er I set up a network shortcut to the pc using the username and password I use to login to the pc
This has always worked for me since version 1.2.2a and works well with version 2.0 and above
Cheers

Hello,
I have tried to connect the med8er to win 7 64 bit but no luck. The device and the pc are in the same lan, med8er see the shares of another pc with win vista 32 on the same lan , a third win xp 32 bits PC in the same lan see share ok.
Have u find out what is the problem that med8er do not see shares of a PC with win7 64 bits?
Thank you!
I'm using win7 64 bits and i cannot use this function and i need it very much.
I'm working in IT an i am familiarized with networks, but i don't know why it is not working.

hi bogdanbz,
Are these PC's all configured in a Domain or in a workgroup?
-
Hello,
I'm a new user and got my mede8er today. Got it updated and all but have been struggling with the wired lan all day. I have windows 7 64-version. To make it more complex my mede8er is linked directly to my internet router. My windows pc is connected to a second router. I'm not sure how this influences things, but so far I have been unable to get anything going. Even after reading all the posts on the forum.
I also use a domain that differs from the standard 'workgroup' microsoft uses.
Any suggestions on how to procede?
THnx
-
Hello,
Al my pc's and the med8er are conected through a workgroup, not in an domain.
Thanks!
WIn xp pc - through switch - shares ok, Win vista 32 through wifi - shares works ok, win 7 64 bits - through switch (med8er is in the same switch) - shares not working.

@bogdanbz,
Can you try to ping your mede8er from a dos box and see if you get response?
If not, please verify that you have link and there are no firewalls on your PC or router blocking things.
If that works, type net view in your dos box and check if you see your mede8er hostname over there.
If not, something is still wrong with your network services on your PC...
Have you tried to reset your router (unplug power and plug it in again)?
Have you tried to open Windows Internet Explorer and type \\mede8er on the explorer web site input line?
So are you able to see the mede8er internal disk over your network from the Win7 side or don't you have an internal disk in your mede8er?
-
@destroyer2 ,
The use of 2 different routers connected to each other makes is more complicated to troubleshoot.....
Are you able to connect your PC and med8er to the same router and verify the working again?
-
Hello Maasbommel,
If i ping the med8er, a get response,
Netview from cmd prompt - it shows med8er, no problem.
I have restet my router a lot of times - no luck.
I see med8er hdd from windows explorer typing \\med8er, my med8er have 500 gb hdd formated with med8er. I can copy, delete files/folder from my win7 64 bits pc
But still no shares on my med8er from my pc.
Thanks!
My router have firewall disabled.
-
bogdanbz,
Ok, so samba seems to work from your win7 64 pc to your mede8er, but not the other way around.
Have you verified that there is no firewall blocking things?
At the moment I don't have a Win7 64bit PC available to do verification.... only a win7 32 bit PC, and that is working.
Let's hope that there are other mede8er users around over here that have win7 64 bit config that is working and give some advise. Can somebody please respond to this post that have this kind of setup?
-
Hi bogdanbz,
I have a similar set up to yours 3 pcs on my network including one with win7 64 bit and all can be seen from the mede8er so perhaps I can help. Maasbommel has gone through the obvious things regarding connections so I think your problem will be with the Win 7 shares themselves.
I see you have vista and xp machines in your network, can they access shares on your win7 pc?
Have you setup your win7 pc shares as per Mede8er1 post above but using your login name and pass rather than "everyone" - see my post above
When you go to media library on the mede8er and select network as the source what comes up? It should say:
return
my shortcuts
workgroup
your network name
sometimes this doesn't appear straight away so give it a bit of time
When you select your network name what shows up - does your win7 pc show up?
If it does, select it and enter the user name and pass you used for the shares on your win7 pc and see if it connects and shows your shares. One of three things will happen at this point:
1 The connection will fail
2 The connection will succeed but no shares will show up, just "return"
3 The connection will succeed and your shares will show up :D
If 1 or 2 happen then try selecting my shortcuts and setup a shortcut to your win7 pc - there are some details of how to do that here http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php?topic=47.0
Try this and see if that now connects and shows your shares
This should get you going but if it doesn't let me know the answers to the various points above and that should enable me to sort it out
Cheers

Hello Shamus,
When i select my network, my win 7 64 bits show up, the conection succeed, but no shares show up.. I have made a shortcut
like here http://www.mede8erforum.com/index.php?topic=47.0 , but still no luck.
I have tried a lot of posibilities, but i cannot see my shares on my win 7 pc.
Thank you!

Hi bogdanbz,
looks like the problem is the share setup on your win7 pc.
Can your other pcs see the shares on the win 7 pc?
Can you copy / paste files from your win7 pc to the other pcs and vice versa
Have you set up the shares on the win7 pc using your username and pass for that pc and set the permissions for that user? (I have my permissions set to full)
Are you using the same user name and pass as above on the mede8er to access the win7 pc?
On your win7 pc are you trying to share a whole drive or just a folder?
The key to accessing shares on win7 64 bit from the mede8er is to get the share permissions correct on the win 7 pc, after that it works fine.
Let me know the answers to these questions and how you get on.
Cheers

Hello again,
I don't think that i have a share setup problem because the other pc (one with vista 32 and one with win xp) can see the shares on my win7 64 bits, i can copy/paste, create folder within win7 shares from others computers .
I have tried Guest method share, no luck, i have created another account on my win7, i have set shares to full for guests, everyone and the second account - no luck.
I am using the same user and pass on the med8er as for others pc that can acces my win 7 shares.
I put my med8er on static ip, on DHCP, but still no luck.
As i wrote here, i have tried all the possibilities, but i still cannot see shares on my win 7 64 bits pc from med8er.
Med8er finds my win7 64 bits pc on workgroup, opens it, but no shares.
I can listen radio shoutcasts with no problem, i can copy folders/files from my win 7 pc to med8er hdd, i can see UPNP shares from my win 7 pc, but no network share.
Please tell me how did u managed to see shares on your win 7 64 bit pc.
Thanks!
I am using symantec antivirus and firewall activated on my pc, but i even tried to disabled them, but still no shares.

Hi bogdanbz
can you tell me what firmware version you are using so I can replicate your setup and see what could be wrong. Once I have done that I will get back to you
Cheers

Hello Shamus,
I am using 2.0.2 firmware. I have tried 2.0.1, the same problem.
Thanks!
-
Hi bogdanbz'
this is how I set my pc and mede8er up (I know this is a repeat of previous posted info - sorry)
Note this is based on a username of Shamus, a password of beer and a computer called strike - substitute your own details as necessary. Shamus is a member of the administrators group and was the username I set the pc up with
1. On pc go to control panel then network and internet
2. go to network and sharing centre
3. Under view your active networks make sure network is EITHER home or work NOT public - change if necessary
4.select change advanced sharing settings
5. Select turn on network discovery
6. Turn on file and printer sharing
7. turn on public folder sharing
8. under file sharing connections select use 128 bit encryption
9. under password protected sharing slect turn off password protected sharing
10. under homegroup connections select use user accounts and passwords
11. click save changes and close out of control panel
12. open explorer and right click on drive that contains folder you want to share
13. click properties and then security tab
14. make sure your username (Shamus) and "Users" are there. If not:
click edit
click add
type name you want to add (eg Shamus) and click check names. Make sure the name is found - should look like strike\Shamus. Click ok, now Shamus(strike\Shamus) should appear in list of names. Do same for users if necessary.
Set permissions for Shamus - mine are set to full.
Click ok to get back out of properties
15. right click on folder you want to share and select share with specific people
16. make sure Shamus is in the list - if not use the down arrow to bring up the list of names, select Shamus and click add
17. click share and then done.
18. Go to mede8er and setup shortcut to win7 pc as described before using Shamus as name and beer as password and save shortcut
19. try shortcut and see if it works
20. if it doesn't worl switch off mede8er, unplug power, plug power back in and restart and try again
Let me know how you get on, I have done this at least 20 times while testing firmware, etc and it definately does work but it can be incredibly frustrating when it doesn't.
If there is any step you are unsure about (probably because I haven't been clear enough) just ask
Cheers

1. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor.
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
2. On the right side, double-click on 'everyoneincludesanonymous' and change the 'Value data' from '0' to '1'
3. Double-click on 'NoLmHash' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
4. Navigate to the following location in the registry editor:
MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters
5. Double-click on 'restrictnullsessaccess' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
6. Close the registry editor
Finally worked for me, now i can see my shares over the network from my win 7 64bits pc!

Hi there,
I'm new, so please be patient. I tested the Win7-64 Workgroup share. No folders showed.
Then I followed the procedure I read somewhere::
5. Double-click on 'restrictnullsessaccess' and change the 'Value data' from '1' to '0'
6. Close the registry editor and rebooted the computer.
Now the share on my computer is visible.
Default Mede8er started with a connection with guest and no password. With that no entrance!
I changed guest to MyName and password to MyPassword (the same user as the owner of the directory) and then I got access to the files in the shared folders.
Cheers, Luc

Hi
I have Win7 64bit on my computers and streaming to Mede8er (v2.02) works fine without any fancy tricks.
Created an additional username with limited priviliges and password on the computer, created shares of the folders I wanted and made sure that these folders had the username set for reading only.
The additional security settings is up to you depending on your personal concerns.
