Title: Life Expectancy
Post by: wrestlemagic on March 22, 2013, 11:42:28 PM
I have a Med500X. I bought this in November 2010. It's served me well.
I use it on a daily basis and I was wondering what the life expectancy was on this machine?

Best wishes

Is it defect now then? Or is it still alive?
What is your meaning of this question?

If you google around you will find 2 terms on this topic for Electronic Equipment:

Economic life expectancy- according to manufacturers. This is the age at which, if the appliance breaks down, replacement is likely to be more economic than repair.

Life expectancy - This means how long you should expect the appliance to last, given reasonable use and perhaps some repair.

The economic life expectancy of any product is extremely difficult to determine. Consumers often complain that the goods should have “lasted” longer when they develop a fault.

Life expectancy is on avg longer then Economic life for electronic equipment.
With the reason that the trend for majority of electronics equipment is that it gets cheaper over time, or newer equipment has better features.

The only thing that is a fact is the warranty you get on a product that warranties on having no cost to get a product repaired.
For Europe that means a warranty of 60 months after registation within 1 month after purchase as mentioned in the manual.

Googling around on economic life expectancy delivers this avg estimations for the category a media player fits in (simular components used):

IT Hardware
Desktops 3-4 years
 Laptops 2-3 years
 Tablets 2-3 years

Small appliances
Mobile phones, MP3-playersetc. 2 – 3 years

Hope this helps......

I would be wary of thinking you like it so much you will buy a 500x1 off ebay from an "upgrader".  One guy bought a "bricked" unit, which had another makes bootloader , but no working firmware, nor the ability to  return to standard firmware.

It's 10th year since I have MED500X. Used on daily basis mainly as music player, still works good.
