I have a (seems to be random) problem when jumping to a different location in a mkv movie file.  Regardless if I:
  • use the time jump (entering minute number while playing)
  • fast forward
  • select a chapter
once the movie jumped or moved to the desired point the movie seems to play at a faster than normal speed (and no sound).  Almost like it is still in a fast-forward mode.
The only way I can get the movie to play at normal speed is to pause at that stage and play again.  I sometimes have to do this multiple times before the movie plays at normal speed.
Consider this as a test scenario:
  • Start playing mkv movie
  • Leave for a couple of seconds
  • Enter a minute number like '50'
  • Movie jumps to minute 50, but now plays at a faster than normal speed
  • Do the 'pause', 'play' or sometimes 'pause', 'pause', 'play' a couple of times to get it to play at normal speed again

Details:
Product & firmware version: MED500X f/w 4.04
Video setting: 1080p 50Hz,24Hz ON,16:9
Playing from internal 1TB hard drive

Has anyone else come across a similar problem?  Are there any known workarounds?

Handbrake 0.9.5 has issue if thats' what you've used.

Thanks for the information.  I also used Handbrake but I'm not convinced that this is necessarily the problem.  If there's something wrong with the mkv file, how:
  • Can I not consistently reproduce the problem on the mede8er.  This problem only happens sometimes on some videos.  And even if it happens and I replay the video I can't necessarily reproduce the problem
  • Can another player (like VLC) on another system play all these videos perfectly.  I could never reproduce this problem at all on VLC

Your specific problem sounds a bit more serious though.  I never had a restart.

User should never, ever use VLC as a benchmark of good encoding. It's designed to play files however badly encoded for the benefit of PC users. The problem with 0.9.5 Handbrake is that  it dosn't always create a valid MKV as a result of not identifying the FPS rate if you use "Use Source Rate". VLC circumvents this somehow and identifies what  rate should be used.

Thanks again for all the help.  If possible, can you assist me going forward on this:
  • Do you know if this a known bug in 0.9.5 and has it possibly been fixed?  I didn't use a fully released version like 0.9.5 to encode my videos.  I used the latest from an Ubuntu PPA repo (svn3782ppa1~lucid1)
  • Is there a way for me to check if my encoded video files has this problem (other than trial-and-error through the Mede8er player)?
  • Are you aware of a way to possibly fix the mkv without having to re-encode?

Download 0.9.4 from here:-
http://sourceforge.net/projects/handbrake/files/0.9.4/HandBrake-0.9.4-Win_GUI.exe/download
Rip one of your problem videos from source again using that and test for your jump problem. There is little point trying to  fixup your faulty files to match 0.9.4 if Handbrake isn't the cuase.
